They also hang signs displaying inspirational quotes from influential black authors and play soothing reggae music throughout the store to promote peace and diversity. The entryway features a large banner saying “No Racism Allowed” at all times, while advertisements promote books written by minorities.
Customers have good things to say about the unique atmosphere Beanbag Books provides. “It’s like walking into a civil rights oasis when I come here,” says William Camden, a regular customer who frequents the store often. “It’s such a welcoming environment – it completely relieves my anxiety when shopping for books, knowing that there won’t be any discrimination present in this establishment. Bookstores are often pretty racist places, but this one isn’t.”
Others share similar sentiments; “I feel like they really understand what we’re going through,” remarks Sarah Hullinger, another frequent shopper at Beanbag Books, “because they make sure their customers are comfortable no matter what background they come from. I identify as an ice cream sandwich, and no one has ever tried to eat me here.”
